Romanee Conti
Few names in wine command as much reverence as Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, often simply referred to as DRC. Based in Vosne-Romanée in the Côte de Nuits, this estate produces some of the rarest, most coveted, and most expensive wines in the world, with a reputation built on centuries of tradition, uncompromising quality, and extraordinary terroir.
The domaine traces its origins back to the 13th century, though its modern legacy began in the 19th century with the de Villaine and Leroy families. Today, it is co-directed by Aubert de Villaine and Perrine Fenal, continuing a stewardship that has preserved the estate’s position at the pinnacle of fine wine.
The jewel of the domaine is, of course, Romanée-Conti Grand Cru, a monopole vineyard of just 1.8 hectares that produces only a few thousand bottles a year. Alongside this are holdings in some of Burgundy’s greatest sites: La Tâche, Richebourg, Romanée-St-Vivant, Grands Échezeaux, Échezeaux, and a small parcel of Montrachet. Together, they represent the very best of Burgundy’s terroirs.
Winemaking at DRC is deeply traditional yet exacting. Whole-cluster fermentation, long macerations, and ageing in 100% new oak barrels yield wines of immense structure, intensity, and longevity. The domaine is also farmed biodynamically, with an almost spiritual focus on harmony between vine and soil.
At auction, bottles of DRC are the ultimate prize. Their rarity, coupled with near-mythical reputation, ensures extraordinary demand among collectors worldwide. For many, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is not just Burgundy’s greatest domaine—it is the pinnacle of fine wine itself.
