It’s Friday, so time for a large one!

We will be bringing you a massive array of brilliant wines from around the world but, in particular, we have our best ever selection of large formats. Below are a few of my picks for various events/functions/Tuesday lunchtimes when you are not dining alone. OK, let’s be inclusive, you might want to have a glass a or two a day from a magnum, but I really shouldn’t be encouraging you to keep it all to yourself.

As Winston Churchill once said:
“A magnum of Claret is the perfect size for 2 gentlemen to share over lunch – especially if one isn’t drinking.”

With that in mind may I recommend Lot 237 – Chateau Leoville Las Cases 2005, 6 magnums which should just be starting to think about getting into it’s drinking window but will, of course, reward some further cellaring.

Now, perhaps you have your sights set on something more significant? 3 litres maybe? Nice wooden box? Christmas is coming after all so how about Lot 671 – Barolo Rocche Brico Rocche from the excellent 2004 vintage. This will require a serious decant but should be stunning.

Still not tempted? Perhaps you are having a party and want something that will please the crowds but look impressive?

If it’s bling you are looking for, look no further than the Mouton Rothschild 2005 Imperials (6L), Lots 271 and 272. Or, if you are in more of a party mood, why not go for the slightly more affordable Torbreck The Pict 2004, Lot 728.

Saint-Emilion Grand Cru - Bacchus Wine Auctions

Finally, if you have determined that 6 litres are not going to be enough, surely you should just buy a couple of cases? Well yes, but let’s think about the environment here - all those corks and such - why no buy 24 bottles in one? In fact, if you buy 2 of these (we have five in the sale) then you can up-cycle the bottles to very fetching floor lamps! Excellence de Belliard St Emilion Grand Cru 2012 Melchiors Lots 340, 365, 366, 378, 379.

Whichever of these you choose, it’ll be one heck of a party.

Wishing you a weekend full of vinous delights and free of cork taint,

Chris
